Asking For It!

One of my favorite lines that Tim uses is, "You get 100% of what you don't ask for!" That's a reminder that plays in my head pushing me to ask for more discounts and bargains. We're currently in the process of remodeling our deck. We have saved up and decided to get composite material so we won't have to mess with maintenance for a long time. We researched quite a bit and found that Home Depot had some Trex on clearance. It was still expensive, but we were able to get the higher quality stuff for the same prices and their cheaper brand.

Today I was at Home Depot again returning some things and picking up more stain. I noticed that the in-stock Trex material was almost gone - only 5 boards left (glad we got there when we did). I also noticed that it was clearanced even more. It was $7 cheaper per board. With 35 boards in our order, that was really significant. I asked the cashier if they do price adjustments. Of course, she said no. Well, actually, she said I could return it and rebuy it but since they were 16' deck boards that were delivered on a big truck... I wasn't going to return them.

I thought it a little more on my way home and wasn't satisfied with that answer. When I got home I called and talked to a manager and then sent Tim back to Home Depot. He's usually better at being firm and getting his way. Amazingly, they didn't give him a hard time. They made one call to the lumber department and then credited us... $262.15!!!

Bottom line... Ask the hard questions, don't accept "no" for an answer, and don't be afraid to ask for the manager. It's much better to have the money in your pocket than regret on your mind.

"You get 100% of what you don't ask for." that is good. I'm gonna have to borrow that one :-)

And, woo hoo on the refund! Way to go!

Great post! I'm usually too reserved to even ask.

I enjoy your Dave Ramsey posts-we are almost done (3 months away) with BS2!
